Origin of April's Fools Day

My 10 year old daughter asked me  where "April's  Fools Day" started. I was not able to reply immediately because I really do not know the answer. Actual "April's Fools Day" is not really  practice here in our country since we have our own counterpart called " Innocence Day" on December 28.

According to Wikipedia , April's Fools Day is celebrated in different countries around the world on the April 1 of every year. It is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. The day is marked by the commission of good humoured or funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, work associates, etc.

The theory goes like this: In 1564 France reformed its calendar, moving the start of the year from the end of March to January 1. Those who failed to keep up with the change, who stubbornly clung to the old calendar system and continued to celebrate the New Year during the week that fell between March 25th and April 1st, had jokes played on them. Pranksters would surreptitiously stick paper fish to their backs. The victims of this prank were thus called Poisson d’Avril, or April Fish—which, to this day, remains the French term for April Fools—and so the tradition was born.
